The Civic Center neighborhood of San Francisco, also known as the Civic Center / Van Ness District, or the Van Ness / civic Center district, or simply Van Ness, is bordered by the SOMA district to the south, the Downtown and Tenderloin to the east, Nob Hill and Pacific Heights to the north, and Lower Pacific Height, Western Addition, and Hayes Valley to the west. The Civic Center district of San Francisco contains mostly apartment buildings and flats and apartments, as opposed to single family detached houses. There are some condos and townhouses, as well as some TIC's, however, either by conversion or in some cases new construction. Before the earthquake of 1906, Van Ness was actually a residential street, lined with beautiful houses. During the fires that burned for days after the quake, though, the Army Corps of Engineers decided to dynamite Van Ness Avenue to create a fire break, because it was the first natural break in the terrain. The destruction of the mansions that used to line Van Ness Avenue cleared the way for Van Ness to become a commercial street instead, and retailers eventually located their shops all along Van Ness Avenue. The Civic Center, including the City Hall, Opera House, Veterans Building, and others, is a spectacular work of architecture.
