Bolinas -- the mysterious "lost" town... (on purpose, that is, because they have torn down any and all street signs leading into town!) Every time the county would replace the road signs, the residents of Bloinas would tear them down again, in an effort to hide the town from tourists and visitors. Bolinas is a small unincorporated town, strategically located on the Marin County coast, off Highway 1, just above Stinson Beach, west of Bolinas Lagoon. Notoriously anti-development, just like all Marin and San Mateo County coastal cities, Bolinas controls growth by controlling water. No water lines means no new homes being built. This method of halting new development has effectively been employed on the San Mateo County Coast as well, but not to the extremes found in Bolinas. The water system will not even support hot tubs, let alone swimming pools or new homes. Bolinas is like something out of a Twilight Zone episode -- refusing to modernize or commercialize in any way -- but it IS beautiful due to its strategic geographic location, relative inacessibility (just look at a MAP -- the residents haven't been able to get Bolinas off all the maps yet!), and its pristine natural setting. We appreciate your desires to remain private, Bolinas, but you are simply being too selfish. Many a California oceanfront town has tried to remain private, yet failed -- so, why should you get away with it?! Everyone should go see how nice Bolinas is! (Bolinas can be found on navigational systems, as well as maps -- just program it into your car's nav system and go!). Looking for some fun? Why not organize a street sign posting parade leading hundreds (or even thousands) of people out to Bolinas to see it and put up arrows and signs to help give directions to Bolinas. Other great ideas: a 10k run through town, a "critical mass" style bicycle tour through Bolinas, a nice company picnic on the beach, etc... Hey, how can anyone not like a town that has a saloon which doubles as the town hall, after all?! Bolinas has a population of only about 2,000 people. Kids in Bolinas attend Bolinas Elementary School, among the tops in the state. You can reach the Bolinas Chamber of Commerce at 415-663-9232.
