Atherton is a lower peninsula city located in San Mateo County, north of Palo Alto and south of Redwood City. Atherton was rated as the place with the most expensive zip code in the U.S. in 2005, by Forbes Magazine. The population of Atherton is about 8,000 people. Atherton is heavily obscured by trees, and set into the thickly wooded low hills of the lower peninsula. Originally a railroad stop between San Francisco and San Jose, Atherton incorporated in 1923, following the model of Hillsborough, its northern peninsula "cousin". Silicon Valley executives, professional athletes, actors, and musicians have all been known to call Atherton their home. Atherton is named after Faxon Atherton, a rich hide and tallow trader from Chile who bought over 600 acres there and built the first south county mansion. His son George married Gertrude Franklin, who as Gertrude Atherton became a famous novelist. Atherton has lot sizes of a one acre minimum, and there are some bay views from the hills, but nowhere near as many view homes as there are in Hillsborough, due to the difference in altitude. Per the 2004 census, Atherton had 2,532 residential housing units, of which 2,493, or 98 percent, were single family detached houses. 32 were single family attached homes, and 7 were multiple housing units. Kids in Atherton usually attend Menlo-Atherton High in the Sequoia Union High School District. Though generally only ranking in the 60th to 70th percentiles of California public schools, somehow, through its prep programs, and undoubtedly also through the generous contributions of its residents to prestigious private universities, as well, it manages to graduate a lot of students into top universities throughout the United States.
