Antioch is one of the largest, AND fastest growing, cities in Contra Costa County, not to mention the bay area in general. With a population of about 105,000 people and rapidly growing, Antioch has much new home construction going on. Strangely, though, Antioch is also the OLDEST city in Contra Costa County, incorporated way back in 1872! The city planted itself near the water and the railroads, as old towns were inclined to do back in those days, and then development was quite slow for decades. However, in recent years, as bay area land has become scarce and the bay area population has exploded, Antioch has become one of the places to which many people have been moving. There is plenty of new home construction, and the homes are affordable. On the down side, Antioch is brutally hot in the summers, school rankings are not too great, and the commute is downright ugly with traffic being a major problem both in town and on the freeways. There is a BART station in Pittsburg -- one would be wise to make use of it. (BART is air conditioned in the summer, too!). Another "cool" fact -- Antioch was built near the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, so there is water for swimming, boating, fishing, and just generally beating the dreadful summer heat. As an old city, like most old cities, Antioch also does well in the parks department, with lots of land donated, annexed, and otherwise accumulated over the years to be devoted to parks. The California state census in 2004 counted 33,248 residential housing units in Antioch, of which 24,917 were single family detached houses, 2,205 were single family attached homes, 5,857 were apartments, condos, and townhouses, and 269 were mobile homes. A tale of two parts of a city -- "old" Antioch is north of Highway 4, whereas "new" Antioch is south of Highway 4. Antioch wants your business -- say hello to the Chamber of Commerce at 925-757-1800. Antioch is one of the fastest growing cities in the east bay. There are plenty of new homes, and plenty more coming, and they are affordable, which makes it popular with young families. The population has recently blown past 100,000 and is still growing strong. New stores continue opening every year, as well. A BART station helps out with what would otherwise be a fairly nasty commute. Crime rates are a bit higher than desired, as is the average summer temperature... and school rankings are a bit lower than desired. This is a town for youth, with 32% of the population under 18 years old. Yet, Antioch is actually the oldest incorporated city in Contra Costa County, having incorporated itself way, way back in 1872.
