Alamo is a prestigious Contra Costa town with a population of about 16,000 people. Located along the I-680 corridor south of Walnut Creek and north of Danville, Alamo is an unincorporated area, which means that it is patrolled by the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department, and governed by a board of supervisors in Martinez, the county seat. The residents still exercise a lot of control in terms of blocking development, however, as is a common theme throughout the bay area. In 2010, the California State Census counted 5,406 owner occupied homes, and 347 rental units — meaning that Alamo is 94 percent owner occupied, which says a lot about it in terms of stability. Alamo joins it neighbors, Blackhawk and Diablo, as “prestigious” towns in the area. Alamo is served by the San Ramon Valley High School district, which generally places in the top 10% in the state. Call them at 925-552-5500. The commute can be nasty from Alamo, as I-680 can be nightmarish, and Hwy 24 just as bad, not to mention the often gridlocked Caldecott Tunnel — Walnut Creek BART is a smart choice. Shopping also exists in neighboring Walnut Creek to the north, as well as neighboring Danville to the south. Alamo got its first park, Livorna, which is about five acres large, in the early 1990’s.
